Replacing hubcaps with alloy wheels?

i know nothing about cars but i have an 07 jetta. it has hubcaps on it right now, but i want to buy the alloy wheels for it. my hub caps are 15 inch, and the alloys are 16. will they work or would i have to buy bigger tires or something? does this even make sense. ha
