If intelligent design is true, why is DNA copying imperfect?

DNA replication is imperfect: each individual carries maybe 1% copying errors (can't remember the exact percentage) among their genes. If evolution does not occur and we are perfectly designed, why would this take place? It can cause congenital illnesses and terminal cancer, and takes place without any external influence.
