AVI converting freeware. does it exist?

Bought a brand new computer the other day that is supposed to be equiped with everything needed to burn DVD's Well, it isn't. It came with a program called roxio and windows DVD maker. Neither will work with AVI videos. So what am I supposed to do? I can NOT afford to pay any more money, this computer cost me a grand. I am totally broke.
